The opinions behind the numbers

How dish ratings work

Rate the dish you ate, at the place you ate it. A useful collection remembers the disappointments as well as the favourites.

Your rating is your current opinion

Choose one to five stars. You can add notes and photos, but a photo is optional. Updating an existing rating changes your opinion without adding another vote. Your original rating date and latest update are shown separately in My dishes.

Dish scores and restaurant summaries

A dish score is the arithmetic mean of its eligible ratings, with one current rating per person for that dish at that restaurant. The count alongside it tells you how many opinions support the score. A five-star dish with one rating has less evidence behind it than one with many ratings.

A restaurant's summary is the mean of its rated dish scores. Each rated dish has equal weight in that summary. It is not a separate review of service, atmosphere, or the restaurant as a whole. We show both the number of rated dishes and the total number of ratings.

What is left out

Unrated entries are shown as “Not yet reviewed.” They are not zero-star reviews and do not lower an average. Unpublished drafts, older duplicate votes, and reviews hidden by moderation are excluded from public scores.

How recommendations are ordered

Search gives exact dish or restaurant names priority over partial matches. Within that order, recommendations balance the score and number of ratings, followed by freshness and distance. The calculation adds the equivalent of two neutral, three-star ratings for ordering only; it never changes the displayed average or count. You can also choose Highest rated or Distance.

The homepage starts with recent nearby contributions when there are enough, then fills from rated dishes around the selected area. It may show farther places when local coverage is sparse; distances are displayed. Known permanently closed restaurants are excluded from current recommendations, while their historical pages remain available.

Opinions, not guarantees

Menus and restaurants change. Dates help you judge how current a review is. Check with the restaurant about availability, ingredients, dietary needs, prices, or opening hours.
